Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson revealed he barely escaped a life-threatening accident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when a pair of track officials ran across the track immediately ahead of his car

The concerning event happened on the third circuit when track officials were seen on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an premature pit stop to swap his compromised front wing

Driver's Immediate Reaction

Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you just see that? I nearly... ended their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"

"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I got to Turn One and there were just two guys sprinting across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"

Track Safety Questioned

"Evidently there's been a failure in communication at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

"We can't understand how on a live track safety personnel can be authorized to just dash across the track in that manner. I don't understand the reason, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but it really can't happen again"

Governing Body Reviewing

The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is actively examining the circumstances

"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was notified that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" stated the governing body

"In the third rotation, marshals were informed and put on alert to access the circuit and clear the fragments once every vehicle had gone by"

"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had made a pit stop, the orders to send personnel were withdrawn and a caution signal was shown in that zone"

"The examination is ongoing what occurred subsequent to that time"
